7. Right Where You Are Sitting:

I’m sitting in my room right now and trying to observe stuffs on my desk.

Actually, the first thing that catches my attention is just the desk. I never look at it as carefully as I do today. I see that there is a big gap between the main part of the desk and the bookshelf on my desk. I usually think they are one whole thing but I find I have had some wrong ideas for a long time. Then, I think I’m really lucky to find it because one side of my shelf is already totally leaves the working range of my desk. So I stand up really fast to adjust it. I’m so glad that I do this work or my things would all fell down. Then, I’m sure that I would do this kind of observation for many times later.

On the other hand, the other thing that I find out about the desk is not that dramatically. I found there are some small cracks and holes on my desk and it’s not that smooth as what I think it is before. I find that it’s not that stable as the thinking in my mind usually. Also, I think I should be a better owner than I usually do.

To conclude, I think I need to always look around my room carefully because I’m not good enough to perfectly make my stuffs in the right place. Meanwhile, I think I need to be a better owner and really take care of what I owned.

One Thing:
On my desk in the dorm, there is a ceramic cup. I bought it one year ago when I started my life at Cheshire Academy and I usually use it to drink water and make some hot drinks. It’s really warm when I pour some hot water inside the cup and it gave me plenty of warmness in the freezing winter here.

The cup showed people the sense of autumn. There is a handle on one side of the cup and it was red on the top, just as similar as the color of the dead leaves in every autumn. The color of the bottom of the handle is yellowish green, like the dying leaves. It showed a change of color and lives on the handle of the cup.

Then, the body of the cup is white; with a really light yellow reflect inside. There are two pieces of leaves, one faced up when one faced down, in two opposite side of the cup. Both of them have a color change from dead leaves’ red and yellowish green on the body of the leaves. Also, I can easily see the vein of the leaves and even touch them because the cup maker made the leaves like sculpture that paste on the cup. They are really smooth. For the one faced up, I can see the last beauty of a dying creature. For the one faced down, it made me to think of the leaves in the backfield of the campus, they are extremely beautiful and enthusiastic.

Lastly, I would still use this cup for a long time and I’m so warm with it.

The story below the truth

When do people know the information of astronomy? For me, it’s many years ago, even before I went to elementary school. However, it took thousands of year to make human know the truth of the galaxy. Galileo was the first person to point the Earth is not the center of the universe to the ignorant people that time. The fall production of Galileo, which was written by the famous playwright Brecht, was talking about the life of Galileo.

According to the play, Galileo discovered the use of telescope and found out that the Earth is not the center of the universe; the Earth was just going around the Sun. Actually, it wasn’t that easy to make people, who believed in God, to believe him as well. His discovery was kind of against theories that the pope’s saying. The Earth is not the center of the universe meant that there’s no reason to stand why it’s the God created the world. It was totally against the rule of the church and even his friends cannot really support him. Lastly, he surrendered himself to the power of the church and admitted that he was wrong. According all, it’s a sad story showed that it was not that easy for people to admit the truth.

I like this play because I really like the way that it showed people’s change from the start of the story to the end. In the first few scenes of the play, when his friend thought it was too dangerous to say something against all theories in thousands of years, Galileo was saying it’s not difficult for people to get the truth, but when they saw the truth they would lastly support his idea. He was clever and proud of what he has found. Then, he thought there’s nothing can stop him to tell people the truth. However, at the end of the story, the power of the church stroke him and made he noticed the truth wasn’t the most important thing but the power. He changed a lot, and he was decadent and lost in the end. The characteristic of Galileo was changing in a excellent way and make me to have plenty of thinking. It made the story has been told in a truly attractive way.

However, I think the play was too difficult for people to understand. I’m a international student, and the play used too many difficult language which are even a lot for English country students. So, it made me feel unsatisfied with understanding the details of the story. Even though it’s not that hard to understand the story line, I cannot understand all the points it showed from the play. So, I wish it can be simpler next time and then I can understand the ideas better.

Over all, I think it’s a good play to tell the story under the truth that even a little child would know these day. Also, I highly recommend people to watch this play with the interesting plot and great acting of actors.

Bertolt Brecht

Bertolt Brecht was born on February 10, 1898, in the medieval city of Augsburg, part of the Bavarian section of the German Empire. Married in 1897, his father was a Catholic and his mother a Protestant. Brecht was their first child, baptized as Eugen Bertolt Friedrich Brecht. His father, Bertolt Friedrich Brecht, worked in a paper factory. His mother, Wilhelmine Friederike Sophie Brezing, was ill with breast cancer most of his young life. He had one brother, Walter, who was born in 1900.
Brecht was a sickly child, having a congenital heart condition and a facial tic. As a result, he was sent to a sanitarium to relax. At age six he attended a Protestant elementary school (Volksschule) and at age ten a private school, The Royal Bavarian Realgymnasium (Koeniglich-Bayerisches Realgymnasium). Like most students, he was educated in Latin and the humanities, later being exposed to Nietzsche and other thinkers. He suffered a heart attack at the age of twelve but soon recovered and continued his education.
Significantly, Brecht was exposed at a young age to Luther's German translation of the Bible, a text considered instrumental in the development of the modern German language. Quotes from and references to the Bible abound throughout Brecht's work and can be found most particularly in Mother Courage and Her Children in the mouth of the chaplain.

Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei, often known mononymously as Galileo, was an Italian physicist, mathematician, engineer, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the scientific revolution. He was born in 15 Feb 1564. His achievements include improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations and support for Copernicanism. Galileo has been called the "father of modern observational astronomy", the "father of modern physics", the "father of science", and "the father of modern science".

His contributions to observational astronomy include the telescopic confirmation of the phases of Venus, the discovery of the four largest satellites of Jupiter, and the observation and analysis of sunspots. Galileo also worked in applied science and technology, inventing an improved military compass and other instruments.

Galileo's championing of heliocentrism was controversial within his lifetime, a time when most subscribed to either geocentrism or the Tychonic system. He met with opposition from astronomers, who doubted heliocentrism due to the absence of an observed stellar parallax. The Roman Inquisition investigated the matter in 1615, which concluded that heliocentrism was false and contrary to scripture, placing works advocating the Copernican system on the index of banned books and forbidding Galileo from advocating heliocentrism. Galileo later defended his views in Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, which appeared to attack Pope Urban VIII, thus alienating not only the Pope but also the Jesuits, both of whom had supported Galileo up until this point. He was tried by the Holy Office, then found "vehemently suspect of heresy", was forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. It was while Galileo was under house arrest that he wrote one of his finest works, Two New Sciences, in which he summarised the work he had done some forty years earlier, on the two sciences now called kinematics and strength of materials.

Excuse for missing homework

Dear Ms. Guarino,

I'm really sorry that I lost my homework for last night. However, I wish I can be excuse by telling you the reason.

On the night of yesterday, when I was to do my English homework, something happened. The teacher on duty was Ms. Anderson. I went to the restroom that was near my room for a while. Because of the opening door, Mason, the dog of Ms. Anderson, came to my room. I was immediately feeling frightening. I was really serious that Mason has even took many girls' underwear last year.

I rushed to my room, and trying to rescue everything in my room because I didn't know what would capture his eye sight. It didn't mean I don't like Mason, but I was totally scared by he came to my room when I was in restroom. Unfortunately, he liked my English homework so much. He was staring at my English homework while I went back to my room; he opened his mouth up to my desk, and then he took my English homework before I came back.

I'm afraid that Mason would also like my other things, so I just make him get out of my room firstly. After that, I asked Ms. Anderson helping me to make Mason's mouth open again. This work was so difficult. When I got my homework from mason's mouth, it was totally wet and wrinkled.

As a result, I cannot finish my homework at all. I'm really sorry for that and I wish you would give me an excuse for that. I would absolutely finish my homework tonight.

Thank you a lot.

Sincerely,
Cherrie
